We live in a world where complex challenges such as climate change, natural disasters, migration, energy security, regional conflicts and terrorism threaten to destabilise the world in which we live. The European Union has a wide range of tools it can use – diplomatic, security, defence, trade, development and humanitarian – which it can pull together to try to deal with some of these challenges. Known as the “comprehensive approach”, it is already been used with success in Somalia and the wider Horn of Africa. Pirates attacked passenger boats and two Cyprus-flagged tugs, 8 crew hijacked, Nigeria

Source in Nigeria informed Maritime Bulletin on three pirates attacks which took place in Akwa Ibom State waters, Bight of Bonny, Nigeria, on Nov 27 13. In the first accident 12 pirates attacked two passenger boats on Ibeno river. Pirates fired in the air, then boarded the boats and robbed passengers, wounding many of them with the machetes. Passengers were forced to leave the boats near the shore, it is understood that they managed to safely reach the shore. Boats were hijacked. Later pirates attacked two tugs, Lamnalco Petrel and LAMNALCO HOUBARA, in the vicinity of Kwa Ibo. Reportedly, 8 crew were hijacked. Somalia and EU Fight over ‘Lack of Aid’ Claims

A diplomatic spat has erupted in Brussels between a high Somali official and the EU commissioner for development over the level of foreign aid given to the wartorn African country. Fawzia Yusuf Adam, Somalia’s minister of foreign affairs and deputy PM, said that her country had received “nothing from the European Union – only promises”. SOMALIA: Court judge assassinated in Mogadishu

Mogadishu (RBC) Unidentified gunmen have assassinated a well known Somali court judge in Mogadishu’s Huriwa neighborhood, RBC Radio reports. Late Hassan Nur Mohamed who was a member of Somali well known judges and worked for the ministry of justice of the federal government of Somalia was killed near the Huriwa district market by men armed with pistols who have immediately escaped from the crime scene. The police reached the area but nobody was arrested for the killing of the judge. The Justice Minister of the Federal Government of Somalia Abdullahi Abyan Nur has condemned the assassination and called for immediate arrest for the murderers. Piraeus, 15 November 2013: Advanced UGS Workshop – Maritime Security Theory and Practice

On November 15, United Guards Services facilitated and hosted an advanced Maritime Security workshop for its team leaders, members and executives. The workshop was delivered by Ioannis Chapsos, who is a Research Fellow in Maritime Security in Coventry University (United Kingdom). This useful workshop, among others, included discussion about contemporary threats to maritime security on worldwide basis, with a specific focus on piracy, its operational typology in regional terms and the applied strategies to counter it at international organizations’, states’ and private sector’s level. Finally, there was a broad interactive session where participants were given the opportunity to discuss legal, training, operational and ethical concerns, surrounding the globalised private security industry.
